12 Months in the PPF Fast Lane

by Vinnie Driscoll

I’ve officially hit the one-year mark in the paint protection film (PPF) world, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the ride. A year ago, I was just figuring out what a squeegee was and why everyone in this industry has a love/hate relationship with door edges. Now, I can throw around terms like “self-healing” and “tack time” like I actually know what I’m talking about. (Whether I do is still up for debate.)

Looking back, it’s been a year filled with fascinating people, cutting-edge tech, and more Cybertrucks than I ever expected to talk about in polite conversation. So buckle up as I take a lap around some of the highlights from my first trip around the PPF sun.

WFCT (Sort Of), SEMA, and the Big Industry Buzz

There’s no better way to understand the pulse of this industry than by attending the major events … unless, of course, you manage to break your ankle right before one of them. That’s exactly what happened to me ahead of the International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (WFCT) 2024 in Orlando. While I had to experience it from the sidelines, the reports, photos, and energy pouring in made it clear: it was a whirlwind of PPF and film products, skills, and serious competition. From top dealers to install-offs, WFCT once again proved why it’s a can’t-miss event.

Fortunately, by the time SEMA 2024 rolled around, I was back on two feet and deep into the action. Part car show, part tech expo, and all PPF playground, it delivered in every way.

From Flop to Top: The Flip-Flop Legend

One of my absolute favorite stories to cover was Randy Humphries, a Murfreesboro, Tennessee-based PPF pro who installs film with unmatched skill, confidence, and, yes, flip-flops. His laid-back style hides a serious work ethic and passion for perfection. Let’s be honest: we all need a little more Randy energy in our lives.

Of Tinters and Thinkers

One column this year, by the one and only Mike Burke of Sun Stoppers, stirred the pot by comparing tinters and PPF installers like personality test opposites. Tinters were pegged as extroverted, fast-paced, energy drink-fueled socializers, while PPF pros came off as calm, introverted perfectionists who thrive in quiet, solo work.

Final Thoughts from Year One

After 12 months, dozens of interviews, and more acronyms than I expected, I can confidently say that this industry is packed with passionate, skilled, and downright interesting people. You all welcomed me with open arms, patient explanations, and only occasional laughter when I asked if PPF came in glitter.

Cheers!
